JUS/NES 372B: History and Religion of Israel in Ancient Times: Ezra-Nehemiah to the Roman Empire. Survey of the history and religion of ancient Israel. Ezra-Nehemiah to the Roman Empire, with emphasis on the formation of rabbinic Judaism.

JUS/NES 382 -- Archaeology and the Bible. Focuses on the relationship between archaeological investigations and the study of the Bible. In combination with a discussion of how archaeology can assist in reconstructing many aspects of the cultural and social milieu of the Bible, this course will survey major discoveries which illuminate the Bible.
CLAS/NES 400 -- Topics of Egyptology (3 units)
Description: This course will survey both the historical development of Egyptology and the archaeological, art historical, literary and other methodologies utilized by this discipline.
NES/JUS 409A: Biblical Hebrew: Prose Texts. Study of Biblical Hebrew grammar and literature: Prose texts.
NES/JUS 409B: Biblical Hebrew: Poetry. Study of Biblical Hebrew grammar and literature: Poetry.
JUS/NES 438: The Book of Psalms. The characteristic features of Hebrew poetry. The literary development of these writings and their function in the Israelite cult. Examples of biblical poetry outside the book of Psalms also considered.
CLAS/NES 451A -- Ancient Egypt: Culture/Language I. Examination of the culture of ancient Egypt through an introduction to hieroglyphs and study of selected inscriptions and texts. Topics include Egyptian kingship, art, literature, religion, and gender issues.
CLAS/NES 451B: Ancient Egypt: Culture/Language II. Continuation of CLAS 451A. Further study of Egyptian hieroglyphic texts through selected topics in Egyptian culture and archaeology.
ANTH/NES 457: Prehistoric Mesopotamia. Theories of the rise of civilization tested against archaeological data from Mesopotamia with comparative material from other areas. Time period: end of the Paleolithic to historic (Sumerian) civilization.
ANTH/NES 474: Archaeometry: Scientific Methods in Art and Archaeology. Critical survey of scientific methods used in archaeology and art history. Emphasis on the potential and limitations of these techniques for reconstructing human behavior.
NES/RELI/JUS 482A: Archeology of the Old Testament World. Survey of the Bronze and Iron Age cultures of Syria-Palestine, ca. 3500-500 B.C., with emphasis on the use of archaeological materials in historical reconstruction.
